It appears likely Gray Davis will become the first California governor to face a recall.
But his Democratic lieutenant governor indicates he may not immediately schedule a race for a successor, and wants the state Supreme Court to clarify the rules.
The secretary of state favors putting the recall and successor contest on the same ballot. The recall could be certified tonight. Candidates would have to file campaign papers at least 59 days before any election.
One Republican known to be interested in the job is actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Another is businessman Bill Simon, who lost to Davis in November.
