The California secretary of state says counties have verified more than a third of the signatures needed to force an election to recall Governor Davis.
The secretary of state´s office announced on its web site that about 390,000 of the more than 988,000 signatures counties have reported receiving so far came from registered California voters.
The announcement comes as an appeals court is set to review a request by Davis supporters to stop the secretary of state from certifying a recall election that could qualify for the ballot tomorrow. “Taxpayers Against the Governor´s Recall” claim the Republican-led drive used petition circulators who were not properly registered to vote in California, among other illegalities.
On Friday, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied the group´s request for a temporary restraining order.
