A setback today for opponents of Governor Davis´ recall.
A Los Angeles judge denied a request to hold a July 23rd hearing on their lawsuit. That is the day county officials must report to Secretary of State Kevin Shelly the number of recall petition signatures they have received and also the number of signatures they have verified as those of registered California voters.
Recall proponents say they have turned in more than 1.6 million signatures to county officials across the state. And they are hopeful the 897,158 valid signatures needed to call for an election will have been verified by that date.
In their lawsuit, members of Taxpayers Against the Governor´s Recall have accused recall proponents of obtaining many of their petition signatures illegally.
