A group fighting the Republican-led drive to oust Democratic Governor Davis sued to challenge the recall process today, alleging signatures on recall petitions were gathered illegally.
The lawsuit names Democratic Secretary of State Kevin Shelley and the registrars of voters in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. Attorneys for Taxpayers Against the Governor´s Recall spoke at a downtown Los Angeles news conference. They said recall proponents violated the law by using petition circulators who were not registered California voters and did not witness signatures being signed. They said illegalities may have been widespread enough to invalidate the recall drive. Proponents claim to have gathered more than 1.6 million signatures, many more than the 897,158 necessary to get the measure on a ballot.
Attorney Wylie Aitken said, “Based on everything we´ve heard and seen it could well not be a valid election.”
