Organizers of a drive to recall California Governor Gray Davis say they have collected more than 1 million signatures. That´s enough to put the issue before voters.
Opponents say they´re skeptical and state officials have yet to validate the names. About 900,000 valid signatures are required to force the recall ballot.
Recall supporters say Davis botched the state´s energy and financial crises.
Meantime, a Los Angeles Times poll says a majority of California voters believe Davis should be removed in a special recall election. 51 percent of those surveyed want Davis to be unseated, while 42 percent would reject the proposed recall. The remainder said they didn´t know what to do.
