Drunks thinking about driving will get two chances to make a phone call this holiday weekend: Once before they drive – to a taxicab dispatcher or designated driver. Or from behind bars – if they´re caught driving drunk.
California Highway Patrol officers are handing out 35,000 free ten-minute prepaid phone cards at sobriety checkpoints and recreation areas such as lakes and parks. The officers also are giving out the cards at designated driver events aimed at young motorists.
The giveaway kicks off a two-year California campaign to reverse a steady increase in alcohol-related traffic deaths since 1997.
All available officers will be out this long weekend looking for motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
