Tuolumne County Supervisors have approved the continued use of one doctor on temporary duty at the county run hospital. There was a March 15th deadline for Tuolumne General Hospital to end contracts with four such doctors.
Hospital Administrator Barry Woerman says TGH will continue the use of one “locum tenen,” or fill-in doctor until the end of June. He says using temporary duty doctors is more expensive than having surgeons on staff. That´s because of insurance costs, and the money the hospital has to come up with for travel and housing for those doctors.
TGH officials want to recruit more full time doctors as part of a plan to fix the hospital´s financial problems. TGH has borrowed $6 million and used $11 million from the county general fund over the past six years.
