An American Airlines flight from Tokyo has been quarantined in San Jose after five people complained of symptoms like those from the mysterious new illness sweeping across Asia.
Flight 128 arrived with 125 passengers and fourteen crew members. Two passengers and two crew members complained of symptoms similar to those found in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. More than 16-hundred cases of the pneumonia-like illness have been reported so far worldwide – with at least 64 deaths.
Joy Alexiou is with the Santa Clara County Health Department. She says the five people will be evaluated by medical personnel. The rest of the passengers and crew will be told about what symptoms to look for. She says four of the five are believed to have arrived at the airport in Tokyo on a flight from Hong Kong, where one of the worst outbreaks is in progress.
