“Stayner” Park Decision Imminent
Officials in Merced are set to decide whether to name a local park after the brother of a man who killed four women in and near Yosemite National Park.
The park could be named “Steven Stayner Park,” in honor of the boy who was kidnapped along a Merced street in 1972. Steven Stayner escaped eight years later, but was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1989.
Some Merced residents have objected to the name because Steven is the late brother of convicted killer Cary Stayner. Cary Stayner was sentenced to death for killing 3 tourists around Yosemite in 1999. He was sentenced to life in prison earlier for the murder of a park nature guide.
