Scientists are taking DNA samples from the bodies of a woman and a fetus found on the edge of the San Francisco Bay to see if they are the remains of Laci Peterson and her son.
The pregnant Peterson has been missing from her hometown of Modesto since Christmas Eve. John Tonkyn, of the state´s Missing Persons DNA Program, says a thigh bone from the fetus and a lower leg bone from the woman are being sampled, along with muscle tissue from both bodies.
The DNA will be compared with that from cheek swabs of Peterson´s parents and with a sample of Peterson´s hair.
Tonkyn says that as bodies degrade, so does their DNA, so additional samples may be needed from the coroner´s office. He says it could be days or weeks before results are known.
