A day after thousands gathered in Modesto to remember Laci Peterson, the man accused in her murder is due in court. Peterson´s husband Scott is charged with her death — and the death of the couple´s unborn son. As the memorial was going on yesterday Peterson met with his new attorney, Mark Geragos, for more than five hours.
Scott Peterson will be back in a Modesto courtroom this morning — but he won´t be wearing chains and an orange jumpsuit. His new attorney has requested that Peterson be allowed to wear a suit at future hearings.
Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Al Girolami is set to hear arguments involving a bid to disqualify him from hearing the criminal case because a related civil case was reassigned from him.
In a case brought by The Modesto Bee newspaper — Judge Roger Beauchesne ordered search warrants sealed until there was an arrest.
He´s set to hear arguments from two other newspapers that it´s time to unseal those warrants. Girolami originally was set to hear the newspapers´ requests.
Geragos says that if the warrants are unsealed — it could hurt his client´s chance for a fair trial.
Laci Peterson disappeared Christmas Eve — the same day Scott Peterson said he was fishing off the Berkeley Marina. The bodies of Peterson and her baby were found last month a few miles from the marina on a beach in Richmond.
