The new University of California campus in Merced has been 15 years in the making. And school officials say the campus´ design plan will help teach students about sustainability.
The campus will incorporate environmentally sensitive buildings and the latest in sustainable architecture and technology. Windows will open automatically as the climate changes. Trees will create a cooling canopy. And natural light filtered through tinted windows will illuminate laboratories.
Nationwide, only Los Angeles has dirtier air than the San Joaquin Valley. U.C. Merced Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey says that´s why the school will be a perfect fit for the region. She says students will learn from the design.
Environmental studies will be a main focus at the school.
