Prosecutors in Modesto say they tapped Scott Peterson´s phone and may have listened to interviews with journalists in case he confessed to killing his wife. Chief Deputy Stanislaus County prosecutor John Goold says that about a dozen letters were sent to notify reporters, a defense lawyer and at least one member of the public that investigators had intercepted their phone calls with Peterson.
Peterson has pleaded innocent to murdering his wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn son. Modesto Bee executive editor Mark Vasche says the newspaper will ask a judge to let it listen to calls four reporters made to Peterson. The phone calls were recorded from January to February — at a time when police said Peterson was not a suspect in his wife´s disappearance.
