College Trustee Killed In Accident

The Columbia College community is mourning a great loss today.

Yosemite Community College District Board Trustee Joseph Mitchell was killed Friday in a traffic accident in San Joaquin County. Details of the accident are still sketchy at this time, but he was enroute back to his Sonora home when the fatal accident took place.

Columbia College spokesman Doug Lau said this morning, “We are saddened by this loss.”

Flags at campuses throughout the college district will fly at half-staff this week in memory of Mitchell, Lau said.

Mitchell has represented the Tuolumne and Calaveras County region of the college district for six years. He was just re-elected to the Yosemite Community College Board of Trustees in November of last year. He was board chairman in 2002 and also served on the college foundation and was a key player in developing the new Calaveras Center in Angels Camp.
