A fire protection property assessment proposed in Murphys did not get enough “yes” votes on Tuesday to pass. Measure “A” required a two-thirds majority to become law, and only received support from 61.9% of those who voted. 38.1% percent were against the proposal.
If passed, the city would have charged between $25 and $75 dollars per lot, to pay for hiring firefighters. Fire officials had pointed to the need for paid firefighters, because there are many times when volunteers are out of the area at their jobs.
