It would be a California political first. A Republican-led campaign to recall California Governor Gray Davis was originally dismissed as unlikely, but now appears likely to become the first governor recall effort ever to reach voters.
Recall supporters need to collect 900,000 signatures of registered voters by September second to qualify the measure for a statewide vote. Organizers say they´ve already collected 700,000 signatures.
The recall campaign has been steered by a little known conservative congressman who has poured $800,000 in family funds into the effort. Conservative Congressman Darrell Issa of Vista also is a potential candidate to replace Davis if a recall vote ousts the governor.
Another potential candidate is actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. His advisers say he will decide whether to run after the July 2nd release of his film “Terminator 3.”
If signature gathering is certified it´s possible the recall election would coincide with the March second primary election next year.
