A local newspaper says two judges have decided whether to grant a request for public funding from Scott Peterson´s lawyers. But the Modesto Bee reported the Stanislaus County judges´ ruling can´t be made public because of state confidentiality laws.
And it´s possible no one will ever know about the decision. A court reporter told the newspaper that similar requests made by men accused in a 1990 murder still remain under seal.
Peterson´s attorney, Mark Geragos, asked for tax money to help pay for his clients defense early last week. The newspaper is speculating that lack of money for experts could be the problem that knocked some of the eight scheduled witnesses from last week´s lineup.
Peterson is accused of killing his pregnant wife, Laci, in their home and dumping her body into San Francisco Bay. He´s hired a topflight legal team for his trial that began two months ago.
