A team of federal and state investigators is trying to piece together the events that led to the death of Eva Schicke — the Arnold firefighter killed while battling a wildfire in the Stanislaus National Forest.
Schicke and a team of elite team of firefighters from the Columbia Air Attack Base were overrun by flames after they were dropped into a rugged area of the forest Sunday afternoon. Six other firefighters were injured, but survived.
Officials say there were reports of the wind shifting during the time of the incident.
An autopsy planned for late today or tomorrow, will determine exactly how Schicke died. She was the first female firefighter from the California Department Forestry to be killed while battling a fire.
