Governor Schwarzenegger is standing up for five California high schools that use Redskins as a name for sports teams.
He´s vetoed a bill that would ban the name, saying local school districts should make their own choices.
The veto spurred celebrations at the rural high schools including Calaveras High School in San Andreas. School officials say the names are part of their town traditions and pride – and aren´t meant to offend.
The bill´s author, Los Angeles Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, says the governor made a mistake. She says the word Redskins is widely recognized as derogatory.
