A new Web site that lets people check to see if registered sex offenders are living in their neighborhood is so popular that the site is being overwhelmed.
The Megan´s Law Web site has only been up and running since Wednesday, but officials with the Attorney General´s Office say it has already received more than five million hits. During peak times the site is getting as many as 60 hits a second.
A spokesman for the Attorney General´s office says with so many people trying to view the Web site, the system often freezes up or displays a message asking users to try again later. The site lets anyone search for registered sex offenders by name or address. This lets people know how many might live near their home, a park or a school.
The state agency is working on expanding the site´s capability, but interest in the Web site is also expected to decrease as its novelty wears off.
