Lawmakers Should Reach Governor’s Deadline

State Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi says lawmakers can reach agreement by Governor Schwarzenegger´s March first deadline on legislation that would substantially reduce workers´ compensation costs.

But Garamendi says Schwarzenegger´s goal of cutting $11billionout of the 91-year-old system is unrealistic and that the workers´ comp bill the governor is backing just doesn´t work the way it´s written.

Schwarzenegger said in his State of the State speech that high workers´ comp costs are bleeding California employers and that he would try to put his cost-cutting plan on the November ballot if lawmakers don´t give him real workers´ comp reform by March first.
