Thousands of community college students from across California have marched to the Capitol in Sacramento to protest Governor Schwarzenegger´s proposal to raise their fees nearly 45 percent.
The governor wants lawmakers to up the fees from $18 a unit to $26. Last year, fees jumped about 64 percent, from $11 to $18, the first hike in several years. However, even at $26, California´s two-year colleges are the cheapest in the nation.
One protester, said he feels betrayed by “one of our own.” Schwarzenegger prides himself on being a product the community college in Santa Monica.
Many students drove all night to get to Sacramento or rode on chartered buses. Yesterday´s rally on the west steps lasted two hours.
