A Stockton man is recovering after a three-vehicle accident just before 7am Thursday morning caused him major injuries.
43-year-old Celso Zavala was eastbound on Highway 26, approaching St. Andrews, when a 1999 Ford Ranger truck crossed the center line, hit Zavala head on, and then caused a rear-end collision with the vehicle behind him.
The California Highway Patrol says it took rescuers from four agencies over an hour to get Zavala out of his vehicle. He was then flown to San Joaquin General Hospital for treatment.
The truck that caused the wreck was driven by 23-year-old Tim O´Neill of Oakdale. He was taken to Mark Twain St. Joseph´s Hospital for his moderate injuries.
And 57-year-old Peggy Hitner of Valley Springs was in the third vehicle. She was also taken to Mark Twain St. Joseph´s Hospital with moderate injuries.
The wreck also caused a spill of herbicides and pesticides which were in the truck driven by O´Neill. The Calaveras County Haz Mat Team and CalTrans cleaned up the spill.
