Austrian Officials Remove Schwarzenegger’s Name From Stadium
Vienna, Austria — Governor Schwarzenegger´s name is gone from a 15,000-seat stadium in his Austrian hometown.
Officials in the town of Graz had Schwarzenegger´s name removed last night.
When the governor refused to block the execution of death row inmate Stanley “Tookie” Williams, activists in Graz called for the stadium to be renamed. Capital punishment is illegal in Austria and many people consider it barbaric.
Schwarzenegger turned the tables on his critics by responding to the protest with a request of his own, stop using his name. He also returned a ring of honor the town gave him in 1999.
The mayor of Graz, Siegfried Nagl, has written to Schwarzenegger urging him to keep the ring.
He´s worried that severing ties to Schwarzenegger, one of Austria´s most famous sons, could potentially cost the city millions in tourist revenue.
