Sacramento, CA — The California National Guard is dismantling a unit under legislative investigation for allegations it illegally spied on anti-war activists during a Mother´s Day rally last spring.
Guard officials say the intelligence unit did nothing improper and merely monitored news media coverage of the Capitol rally at the request of Governor Schwarzenegger´s press office.
But state Senator Joe Dunn says the unit´s activities may have violated the law. Guard officials said they were exonerated by a US Army Inspector General´s Office investigation, but the full investigative report has never been made public and Dunn said questions remain.
The Guard´s new leader ordered the unit disbanded in a three paragraph memo last month.
