Sacramento, CA — Federal and local counter terrorism officials are checking possible ties between an Islamic gang at the New Folsom Prison and a Pakistani man arrested in Los Angeles.
Prison officials say that the group, active for the past 5 years, is headed by an inmate. A state Homeland Security official reports no sign of widespread Al-Qaida recruitment within the prison system, but adds that only a few people are needed to conduct an attack.
According to the FBI, the case broke when they found guns, jihad materials and a list of alleged targets and dates in the Los Angeles apartment of former Folsom inmate 25 year old Levar Washington. Officials say recruitment for radical or criminal activity is nothing new, and that inmates are vulnerable to it.
