The troubled California Department of Corrections is being renamed the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation — reflecting a new emphasis on diverting criminals both before and after prison.
More power will shift to the Youth and Adult Correctional Agency. That means wardens and directors of the corrections department and California Youth Authority will spend their time on the proper treatment of inmates — stripped of other administrative duties such as hiring and negotiating with employees.
It´s all part of a reorganization plan set in motion today by Governor Schwarzenegger´s administration. The plan goes to a state commission, then to lawmakers for an up-or-down vote in about 90 days.
