Columbia College Educators Recognized for Excellence
Some of the best and most talented teachers in the country are located right in Tuolumne County. In fact, seven Columbia College professors recently joined the distinguished ranks of the nation´s most respected educators – Who´s Who Among America´s Teachers for 2004. Every two years, members of the academic community are honored for their educational excellence through this program.
These teachers were chosen by the community for their influence and role as outstanding educators. The Columbia College professors named for this year are John Carter, Ted Hamilton, Maryl Landess,Dr. Micha Miller, Dr. Joe Ryan, Dr.Jeff Tolhurst and Jim Toner. In addition, Dr. Jim Riggs was selected in The Contemporary Who´s Who of professionals. He has been president of Columbia College since 1997. Professor John Carter instructs vocal music, music theory, music history and choral music. Ted Hamilton, was recently honored as California´s Professor of the Year for 2004 by the Council for advancement and Support of Education and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He teaches history, political science and geography. Maryl Landess is a mathematics professor. Dr. Micha Miller teaches biology, and is a world class mountain climber. Dr. Joe Ryan teaches chemistry and his classes are among the most popular at the college. Dr. Jeff Tolhurst instructs earth science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Jim Toner, in addition to introductory English courses, also instructs film appreciation, British literature, Shakespeare and creative writing.
