Governor Schwarzenegger left the state´s budget deficit — and Democratic wife Maria Shriver — back home in California for a day and made a quick trip to the snow-covered nation´s Capitol for the inauguration.
He surprised constituents this morning at a breakfast party hosted by Republican Congressman David Dreier of San Dimas, the chairman of the House Rules Committee and Schwarzenegger´s closest Washington ally. Guests crowded him posing for pictures, and even members of Congress requested autographs. The Austrian-born former bodybuilder said he´s watched presidential inaugurations since coming to America in 1968.
The moderate governor represents a state that voted for Democrat John Kerry by about ten percentage points, and he disagrees with George Bush on social issues including abortion rights and amending the Constitution to ban gay marriage. Schwarzenegger weighed in on some second-term foreign policy goals for the president, saying, “I´m sure he has an interest, like every American, to get out of this war as quickly as possible.”
