Secretary of State Kevin Shelley choked back tears in his San Francisco driveway today as he resigned from office.
He´s been under intense scrutiny lately for his shoddy oversight of 46 million dollars in federal Help America Vote Act funds. A December state audit found his office had poorly managed the funds. The audit also said Shelley´s office didn´t properly oversee consultants it hired.
Shelley said today “While I have made errors that I deeply regret, I have never, ever done so with the intent of subverting the law or benefiting myself.”
Shelley is the son of former San Francisco Mayor and US Representative Jack Shelley and was once one of California´s rising political stars. His star faded dramatically today. He also apologized to those who worked under him and blamed his “intense drive to accomplish good things” for his impatience.
His departure paves the way for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, to name a replacement for the Democrat.
