Governor Schwarzenegger this morning named a longtime former Santa Cruz legislator, Bruce McPherson, as California´s 29th secretary of state.
A news conference was held at the state capitol to make the announcement.
“Governor Schwarzenegger called, and Senator McPherson answered,” McPherson said this morning.
McPherson left the state Senate last year after eleven years in the Legislature, and during today´s news conference, said “it´s my understanding that I was his second choice, but because Maria [Shriver] didn´t want to take it as a Valentine´s gift, I just want to say I´m not too proud to take this task on anyway.”
Governor Schwarzenegger will also address Republicans gathering in Sacramento today to rally their support for his plan to overhaul state government and politics.
Republicans and Democrats have stopped seeking a compromise in the legislature over a series of constitutional amendments over the plan. And now Schwarzenegger is threatening to bypass lawmakers and take his plan straight to voters this November.
