Cal Trans has announced that it will temporarily close a stretch of Highway 26 in Calaveras County.
Officials say they want to examine whether the recently reconstructed Highway 26-Silver Rapids Road intersection needs further work. Some residents have expressed concern over the safety of the intersection. A Central Valley woman was killed at the intersection in a 2-car crash earlier this month. The accident happened when a motorist allegedly ran a stop sign. San Andreas based CHP Officer Bryan Duquesnel says the stop sign has been at the intersection for several years.
Cal Trans contracted for a $2-million project to improve the intersection in 2004.
