SACRAMENTO (AP) __ Governor Schwarzenegger says he´ll place measures before voters in a special election this year to cut state spending and change how teachers are paid.
His measures will also revise how political districts are drawn
and reorganize the pension system for public employees into a 401-K-style system. The moves announced today have been anticipated for months. They pit the popular G-O-P governor against some of the state´s most powerful political forces __ including the state´s majority party, the Democrats; the education coalition; and most of the largest labor unions. Schwarzenegger has called the election a great battle that carries through the message from the 2003 recall election. He vows to raise $50 million to support his agenda.
