SACRAMENTO (AP) __ A veteran employee of the secretary of state´s office has taken over as acting secretary following the departure of Kevin Shelley.
Shelley resigned as of midnight Friday amid investigations into his personal and ethical conduct as the state´s top elections official. Governor Schwarzenegger has nominated former state Senator Bruce McPherson to finish Shelley´s term. Until McPherson is confirmed and sworn in, Cathy Mitchell will be acting secretary of state. She began with the office in 1981, assuming the post of undersecretary in November. Whoever holds that position automatically assumes the
duties of secretary if there is a vacancy. She is a Democrat, as was Shelley. Schwarzenegger and McPherson are Republicans.
