Former Republican state Senator Bruce McPherson has won a key confirmation vote in his quest to become California´s 29th secretary of state.
The Senate Rules Committee recommended this afternoon that the full Senate approve Governor Schwarzenegger´s nomination of the 61-year-old McPherson to succeed former Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, who resigned from office last month.
The Assembly Rules Committee will begin hearings on the nomination tomorrow. If confirmed, McPherson will finish the remainder of Shelley´s term, which expires in 2007.
Shelley resigned February 4th while fighting allegations he mishandled millions of dollars in federal elections funds, rewarded political supporters by bending state hiring rules and accepted questionable campaign contributions.
