Californians Mourn The Passing of Pope John Paul II

The faithful across California mourned the death of Pope John Paul the Second throughout the weekend with somber words of praise mixing with fond memories and even chants of “Viva El Papa!”

Former President Gerald Ford and former first lady Nancy Reagan also lauded the 84-year-old pontiff as thousands — including many in the state´s large Hispanic immigrant communities — attended special Mass celebrations. Cardinal Roger Mahony, head of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, said John Paul II will be remembered for his “indefatigable energy” in travel, the length of his 26-year papacy and his canonization of many saints.
