Schwarzenegger’s Inmate Rehab Promises Hitting Opposition

Inmate rights lawyers asked a federal judge to hold Governor Schwarzenegger´s administration in contempt of court for allegedly violating an injunction requiring parole reforms.

Schwarzenegger settled the lawsuit on his first day in office, shortly after the Little Hoover commission labeled California´s parole system “A $1 billion-dollar failure.”But now the corrections department is ending its practice of sending parole violators to halfway houses, substance abuse treatment centers or using electronic monitors instead of returning them to prison. The administration says other rehabilitation programs remain both before and after release, meaning the administration isn´t violating the court settlement.
