Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is supporting a controversial plan to retrieve uncollected state income taxes.
The plan would encourage citizens to inform the state of fellow Californians who owe the government tax money. Those who come forth would be paid 10% of the amount owed.
The Franchise Tax Board also supports the proposal aimed at collecting nearly $6.5 billion in delinquencies. Critics of the measure say the state´s tax authorities should improve the way taxes are collected before they encourage citizens to tell on each other.
If approved by the legislature, the plan could go into effect by July 1st.
