Sacramento, CA — State lawmakers frustrated with the slow pace of reforms in California´s prison system are slashing Governor Schwarzenegger´s corrections budget.
If only to call attention to their concerns as the governor prepares to release his revised spending plan next month.
The Senate today approved the bulk of Schwarzenegger´s prison system reorganization plan on a bipartisan vote.
That sets the stage for a new consolidated Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to take effect July 1.
But then senators who oversee corrections spending chopped nearly $100 million out of the $7 billion prisons budget.
Senators say they´ve lost confidence in the department´s ability
to oversee its own reform efforts.
