McPherson Says New Lines Can’t Be In Place For 2006 Elections

Sacramento, CA — California´s top elections official, Secretary of State Bruce McPherson, says the new legislative and congressional districts sought by Governor Schwarzenegger can´t be in place for 2006 elections.

McPherson told the Sacramento Press Club today that there´s, in his words, no way I can see that we can make 2006.

He also says it´s questionable that new districts can be in place in time for 2008 elections.

Schwarzenegger announced in January that he wanted to take the power to draw the districts away from the Legislature and have a panel of retired judges draw new lines in time for 2006 balloting.

He´s threatening to call a special election in November to give voters a change to approve an initiative that would make that change.

Democrats say McPherson´s comments raise doubt about the need to have that election.
