Aftershocks Persist Following 5.6 Earthquake

Palm Springs, CA — Geologists say the aftershocks continue after an initial 5.6 magnitude quake that shook the Southern part of the state yesterday morning.

The quake and its subsequent aftershocks were centered about 18 miles southwest of Palm Springs at a depth of about 9 miles in a sparsely populated are a of Riverside County.

The quake hit at about 8:40 am and was widely felt with reports from as far away as Los Angeles and San Diego.

Geologists say as many as 200 aftershocks were recorded as of midnight Sunday, the strongest of which registered a 3.1.
