Sacramento, CA — Attempts to bring Highway 99 into the interstate freeway system is getting a boost from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In a letter to the Central Valley´s congressional delegation the governor says he supports the effort, saying it is “high priority” for his administration.
The highway crosses the central San Joaquin Valley, connecting the agriculturally rich areas of the valley with the metropolitan areas in the north and south.
Supporters say making the 99 an interstate would mean more federal funds to fix the aging roadway, and more local jobs.
But some county planners worry that focusing on Highway 99 could take attention away from other transportation projects, and divert money from local roads.
