Groveland, CA– California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Tuolumne- Calaveras Unit officials say they will be conducting about a 40 acre prescribed burn in the Groveland area on Monday, October 23rd.
The burn will take place about one half mile west of Tioga High School, adjacent to Pine Mountain Lake. The prescribed burn project is estimated to begin at about 10am and continue through early afternoon.
Officials say the goal of the project is to augment an existing fuel break by controlling the resprouting of brush and live oak and by maintaining grass as the predominate vegetative cover.
They add that the long term objective of the burn is to reduce the risk of large damaging wildfires in order to protect homes, communities, and multiple watershed resources.
This burn is reported to be the first of a planned series of burns that will be carried out over the next several years under agreement between CDF and cooperating landowners.
