San Andreas, CA — A recently declared federal disaster from July´s severe heat wave means Calaveras farmers could see some economic relief.
Thanks to a request by Governor Schwarzenegger, the US Department of Agriculture last week declared 16 California counties, Calaveras included, as primary natural disaster areas.
Farmers are now eligible for low interest emergency loans from USDA´s Farm Service Agency.
Calaveras County Agriculture Commissioner Mary Mutz estimated local losses from the heat wave at more than $200,000 in walnuts and poultry.
Tuolumne and Amador counties are named in the disaster declaration as contiguous disaster counties and farmers living in those areas are eligible for the same emergency loans.
