Man dies when shot by police in chase after shoplifting call

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi authorities say a man wanted for alleged shoplifting has been shot and killed by police.

Biloxi police tell local media that the man fled in a pickup truck after an officer tried to stop him Wednesday.

Police Maj. Christopher De Back says an officer tried to use a stun gun, but the man drove away. De Back says the man tried to hit an unmarked van driven by another officer. The officer shot the man, who then crashed his truck into a forklift parked at a store and died. The man was not identified.

Spokesman Warren Strain says the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating.

DeBack says the officer involved in the shooting is on paid leave. He was not identified. De Back says the victim was white.
