Outcry over Utah fatal police shooting captured on camera
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Anti-police brutality groups in Utah are livid after a prosecutor this week determined police were legally justified in a fatal shooting of a black man captured on body camera.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said Friday that while one video appears to show Patrick Harmon shot from behind as he ran from police, a slowed-down version shows he pivoted toward officers with a knife.
Officer Clinton Fox told investigators Harmon threatened to stab him before he fired the fatal shots. Body camera video shows Harmon shot at close range after Fox yells, "I'll f....ing shoot you."
The 50-year-old Harmon died Aug. 13 after he tried to run away following a stop for biking without a light.
Lex Scott, a Black Lives Matter organizer in Utah, said the community wants the district attorney to resign.
