Volunteers Are Needed In Sonora To Help Cancer Patients on Their Road to Recovery
The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program is seeking volunteer drivers in Tuolumne County who are willing to drive cancer patients to and from their lifesaving cancer treatments. Currently in the Tuolumne County, there is only one active volunteer available to drive patients, but there is a need for much more.
“We are in desperate need of volunteers to drive our cancer patients to and from their treatments, especially in Sonora but we don’t currently have the capacity,” said Linda Sites, specialist, Mission Delivery, American Cancer Society. “The reason we need more volunteers is that many of the individuals who request this service may need to go to treatment every day for a week or up to a month.”
A successful Road to Recovery program can be a tremendous asset to the Tuolumne County community. Volunteers provide an essential and necessary service. Even the greatest medical advancements are useless if the patient cannot get to treatment.
“Tuolumne County not only has one of the highest number of older adults per capita in California, but it is geographically spread out over foothill and mountainous areas,” said Susan Balcarcel, Sierra Cancer Center’s RN, MFT. “With limited public transportation, finding ways to get to their cancer treatment is one of the biggest challenges faced by many of our older patients in our community.”
Trainings are provided to those who want to volunteer their time. Requirements for volunteering include having a good driving record, a valid driving license, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.
The American Cancer Society is hosting an Interested Parties Meeting for those community members interested in learning more about the Road to recovery program. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 10 at Starbucks on Mono Way in Sonora from 6-7 pm.
