Marylia Kelley, Executive Director of Tri-Valley CAREs (Communities Against a Radioactive Environment), a watchdog organization overseeing the Livermore Nuclear Weapons Laboratory, will be in Calaveras County on Saturday June 20th, and will speak at the Murphys Library, 480 Park Lane, Murphys, CA, at 1:30 pm.
Marylia will have just returned from the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference at the United Nations, and will update us on the status of disarmament internationally. She will report back to us from Washington DC about the national budget request, as well as explain what’s going on with nuclear weapons in Northern California at Livermore Lab. She will outline in layman’s language the nuclear weapons programs currently underway and discuss the various ways in which they impact our local region. Following the presentation we will have a roundtable discussion about the domestic impacts of nuclear weapons, including the health and environmental costs of nuclear pollution, and the fiscal costs of our commitment to further nuclear weapons development.
Marylia Kelley brings over 32 years of research, writing and facilitating public participation in decisions regarding the Livermore Lab, nuclear weapons, waste and cleanup. Marylia has served on the Livermore Lab Community Work Group for more than 25 years, advising the government and the community on the Lab’s Superfund cleanup of toxic and radioactive pollution. She has testified on issues concerning the nuclear weapons complex before the House Armed Services Committee, the California Legislature and the National Academy of Sciences.
