What’s better than curling up with a good book? Cuddling up with a Paws to Read therapy dog and a good book!
This summer new young readers can once again practice their reading skills at the Tuolumne County Library at 480 Greenley Road, Sonora, CA. The local chapter, Therapy Dogs of the Sierra is partnering with the library for a weekly Paws to Read program for young readers on Thursdays. Children can sign-up to read for 15 minutes to a trained and certified therapy dog. Children will meet the dogs in the Sonora Main Community Meeting Room where they can select a book or bring a favorite one to read to the dog of their choice. The program is offered for 6 weeks beginning June 19 at 11:30 AM until 12:00 noon through Thursday, July 24th.
Paws to Read is a very simple concept: Children read to dogs. The dogs listen and don’t tease, laugh, or judge the child. Research has shown that children who practice their reading skills by reading to trained therapy dogs improve their reading abilities, gain confidence, and find reading more enjoyable.
Parents and guardians can call the library at 533‐5507 or stop in at the Sonora Main Library for more information and to sign their child up to read to a therapy dog.
