The 23rd annual Motherlode Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration will take place on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, at 2 p.m. The event will feature Carmen Perez, the National Co-Chair of the 2017 Women’s March in Washington, D.C., a demonstration which drew over 5 million people nationwide to advocate legislation and policies to improve human rights. Ms. Perez is the executive direction of “The Gathering for Justice,” an organization founded by Harry Belafonte and dedicated to human rights for those who are disenfranchised. The Pine Cone Singers, led by Dennis Brown, and the vocalist Michelle Allison will perform. There will be an invocation by Imam Ahmad Kayello of the Modesto Islamic Center. The winners of the MLK essay contest will be announced.
This free event will be held at the Sonora High School Auditorium, at the corner of Shaws Flat Rd. and N. Washington St. in Sonora. It will be followed by a reception in the cafeteria with refreshments and a chance to speak with Ms. Perez.
